Mason's Assistant / Tender — Portland Metro Masonry

Portland Metro Masonry is a family-owned masonry contracting business based in SE Portland, with 25+ years in the trade. We specialize in chimney repair and rebuilding, fireplace restoration, flagstone patios, brick facades, retaining walls, and repointing. We take pride in our work, and we're looking for a Mason's Assistant/Tender to support our Crew Lead and help our jobs run smoothly.

The Role

We're looking for someone who wants to learn the masonry trade from the ground up. This is a support role working directly under our Crew Lead/Foreman — you'll be doing the hands-on work that keeps a job moving: prepping the site, mixing mortar and concrete, moving materials, and keeping the mason stocked and ready to work. It's a great fit for someone with general construction experience who's motivated to grow into the trade.

Compensation: Hourly. Starting at $18/hour, more with experience, with raises as you grow into the role.

What You'll Do

  • Prep the jobsite each morning so the crew can get straight to work
  • Mix mortar and concrete to spec
  • Move and stage materials, and keep the mason stocked and supplied throughout the day
  • Keep all tools and equipment clean, organized, and in good condition — this is a core part of the job, not an afterthought
  • Keep the jobsite clean and organized throughout the day, and leave it as clean as possible before heading out
  • Help maintain a safe worksite and follow all safety practices and instructions from the foreman
  • Communicate with homeowners/clients when needed — always courteously and professionally
  • Follow the direction of the Crew Lead/Foreman and uphold the standards of the job and the company
  • Show up on time, every day

What We're Looking For

  • Experience in construction (masonry experience is a plus, but not required)
  • A genuine desire to learn the masonry trade and grow your skills over time
  • Coachable — you take direction and feedback well, and treat correction as a normal part of learning rather than something to take personally
  • Naturally organized, especially when it comes to tools and materials
  • Reliable and punctual — you show up on time, every day
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites around the Portland metro area
  • Physically able to do demanding physical work outdoors in all conditions
  • A friendly, respectful manner with clients and coworkers alike
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States (U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and holders of valid work authorization are all welcome to apply — see note below)

Jobsite Safety

Safety is everyone's job, not just the foreman's. You'll be expected to follow OSHA-compliant safety practices on every job, no exceptions.

  • Follow OSHA safety standards and the foreman's safety instructions at all times
  • Wear all required PPE
  • Keep work areas free of hazards as part of daily cleanup
  • Speak up immediately if you notice anything unsafe

Who We Want

We're just as picky about Character as we are about experience. This job is in people's homes, so we need someone who's easy to have around — respectful of the crew, courteous with clients, and careful with other people's property.

We're an inclusive, LGBTQ+-friendly business, and we welcome immigrant workers — anyone legally authorized to work in the United States is encouraged to apply, regardless of where you're from. Like all employers, we verify work eligibility for every new hire through the standard federal Form I-9 process.

Why Work With Us

  • Hands-on training and a real path to growing your skills in the trade
  • Family-owned business with 25+ years of local reputation and repeat customers
  • Steady pipeline of chimney, fireplace, patio, and repointing work across the Portland metro area
  • A respectful, drama-free crew culture
  • [Any other perks — e.g., use of company equipment, growth path, etc.]

Equal Opportunity Employer

Portland Metro Masonry is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We hire and promote based on skill, character, and work ethic — nothing else. We welcome applicants of every race, ethnicity, national origin, age, and ability, and we strongly encourage people of all gender identities and expressions — women, men, and non-binary applicants alike — to apply. Every person on our crew, and every client we serve, deserves the same respect, and that's the standard we hold ourselves to.

Masonry Crew Lead / Foreman — Portland Metro Masonry

Portland Metro Masonry is a family-owned masonry contracting business based in Portland's Richmond neighborhood, with 25+ years in the trade. We specialize in chimney repair and rebuilding, fireplace restoration, flagstone patios, brick facades, retaining walls, and tuck pointing. We take pride in our work, and we're looking for an experienced Crew Lead/Foreman to help run jobs day to day.

The Role

We need a hands-on Crew Lead/Foreman who can run masonry jobs from start to finish — reading plans, staying on schedule, keeping quality tight, and managing a small crew on-site. This is a leadership role for someone who's already a skilled mason and is ready to take ownership of jobs, not just work them.

Compensation: Commission-based. Set percentage per project.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and oversee day-to-day work on job sites — chimneys, fireplaces, flagstone patios, brick facades, retaining walls, and repointing projects
  • Read and work from plans/specs, and keep jobs on schedule and on budget
  • Be the face of the job on-site: communicate clearly and warmly with clients, keep them updated on progress, and answer their questions
  • Direct your crew and genuinely mentor your assistants — teach the trade, don't just bark orders
  • Keep the jobsite clean and tidy every single day before wrapping up, and leave it spotless with a thorough final cleanup when the job is done
  • Run a quiet, respectful worksite — you're working in someone's home or yard, so keep disruption to their day to a minimum and treat their property like it's your own
  • Ensure jobsite safety and that finished work meets our quality standards
  • Coordinate material deliveries and equipment needs for each job

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of hands-on masonry experience, including brick, block, and/or stone work
  • Prior experience leading or supervising a crew
  • Strong knowledge of masonry techniques, tools, and materials
  • Your own reliable truck (in good working condition) and tools; trailer if needed
  • Valid driver's license
  • Physically able to perform demanding masonry work outdoors in all conditions
  • A genuinely friendly, easygoing manner with clients — someone homeowners feel comfortable having on their property
  • Patience and a teaching mindset with less-experienced crew members
  • Respect for everyone you work with and around, full stop

Jobsite Safety

As Crew Lead, jobsite safety is your responsibility. Every project gets run to OSHA standards, and hazards get addressed immediately — never worked around.

  • Enforce OSHA jobsite safety standards on every project
  • Conduct daily safety checks and address hazards immediately
  • Ensure proper PPE use by yourself and your crew at all times
  • Model safe practices at all times — no shortcuts, ever
  • Report and document any incidents or near-misses

Who We Want

We're just as picky about character as we are about skill. This job is in people's homes, so we need someone who's easy to have around — courteous with clients, patient with the crew, and respectful of other people's space and property. We're an inclusive, LGBTQ+-friendly business and expect the same respect for everyone on the crew and every client we work with, no exceptions.

If you're a great mason but not great with people, this probably isn't the right fit.

Why Work With Us

  • Family-owned business with 25+ years of local reputation and repeat customers
  • Steady pipeline of chimney, fireplace, patio, and repointing work across the Portland metro area
  • Autonomy to run jobs your way — we're not a big bureaucratic outfit
  • A respectful, drama-free crew culture

Equal Opportunity Employer

Portland Metro Masonry is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We hire and promote based on skill, character, and work ethic — nothing else. We welcome applicants of every race, ethnicity, national origin, age, and ability, and we strongly encourage people of all gender identities and expressions — women, men, and non-binary applicants alike — to apply. Every person on our crew, and every client we serve, deserves the same respect, and that's the standard we hold ourselves to.
